    The changing rationale for governance choices: early vs. late adopters of global services sourcing

    This article studies how the logic of firm governance choices varies as a function of the time of adoption of particular sourcing practices. Using data on the diffusion of global business services sourcing as a management practice from early experiments in the 1980s through 2011, we show that the extent to which governance choices are affected by process commoditization, availability of external service capabilities, and past governance choices depends on whether firms are early or late adopters. Findings inform research on governance choice dynamics specifically in highly diverse and evolving firm populations

    First results from dark matter search experiment with LiF bolometer at Kamioka Underground Laboratory

    Tokyo group has performed first underground dark matter search experiment in 2001 through 2002 at Kamioka Observatory(2700m.w.e). The detector is eight LiF bolometers with total mass 168g aiming for the direct detection of WIMPs via spin-dependent interaction. With a total exposure of 4.1 kg days, we derived the limits in the a_p-a_n (WIMP-nucleon couplings) plane and excluded a large part of the parameter space allowed by the UKDMC experiment.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figure

    Blow-up profile of rotating 2D focusing Bose gases

    We consider the Gross-Pitaevskii equation describing an attractive Bose gas trapped to a quasi 2D layer by means of a purely harmonic potential, and which rotates at a fixed speed of rotation Ω\Omega. First we study the behavior of the ground state when the coupling constant approaches a_∗a\_* , the critical strength of the cubic nonlinearity for the focusing nonlinear Schr{\"o}dinger equation. We prove that blow-up always happens at the center of the trap, with the blow-up profile given by the Gagliardo-Nirenberg solution. In particular, the blow-up scenario is independent of Ω\Omega, to leading order. This generalizes results obtained by Guo and Seiringer (Lett. Math. Phys., 2014, vol. 104, p. 141--156) in the non-rotating case. In a second part we consider the many-particle Hamiltonian for NN bosons, interacting with a potential rescaled in the mean-field manner −−a_NN2β−−1w(Nβx),with--a\_N N^{2\beta--1} w(N^{\beta} x), with wapositivefunctionsuchthat a positive function such that \int\_{\mathbb{R}^2} w(x) dx = 1.Assumingthat. Assuming that \beta < 1/2andthat and that a\_N \to a\_*sufficientlyslowly,weprovethatthemany−bodysystemisfullycondensedontheGross−Pitaevskiigroundstateinthelimit sufficiently slowly, we prove that the many-body system is fully condensed on the Gross-Pitaevskii ground state in the limit N \to \infty$

    Longitudinal chirality, enhanced non-reciprocity, and nano-scale planar one-way guiding

    When a linear chain of plasmonic nano-particles is exposed to a transverse DC magnetic field, the chain modes are elliptically polarized, in a single plane parallel to the chain axis; hence, a novel longitudinal plasmon-rotation is created. If, in addition, the chain geometry possesses longitudinal rotation, e.g. by using ellipsoidal particles that rotate in the same plane as the plasmon rotation, strong non-reciprocity is created. The structure possesses a new kind of chirality--the longitudinal chirality--and supports one-way guiding. Since all particles rotate in the same plane, the geometry is planar and can be fabricated by printing leaf-like patches on a single plane. Furthermore, the magnetic field is significantly weaker than in previously reported one-way guiding structures.     Magnetic burial and the harmonic content of millisecond oscillations in thermonuclear X-ray bursts

    Matter accreting onto the magnetic poles of a neutron star spreads under gravity towards the magnetic equator, burying the polar magnetic field and compressing it into a narrow equatorial belt. Steady-state, Grad-Shafranov calculations with a self-consistent mass-flux distribution (and a semi-quantitative treatment of Ohmic diffusion) show that, for \Ma \gtrsim 10^{-5}\Msun, the maximum field strength and latitudinal half-width of the equatorial magnetic belt are B_{\rm max} = 5.6\times 10^{15} (\Ma/10^{-4}\Msun)^{0.32} G and \Delta\theta = \max[3^{\circ} (\Ma/10^{-4}\Msun)^{-1.5},3^{\circ} (\Ma/10^{-4}\Msun)^{0.5}(\dot{M}_{\rm a}/10^{-8}\Msun {\rm yr}^{-1})^{-0.5}] respectively, where \Ma is the total accreted mass and M˙a\dot{M}_{\rm a} is the accretion rate. It is shown that the belt prevents north-south heat transport by conduction, convection, radiation, and ageostrophic shear. This may explain why millisecond oscillations observed in the tails of thermonuclear (type I) X-ray bursts in low-mass X-ray binaries are highly sinusoidal: the thermonuclear flame is sequestered in the magnetic hemisphere which ignites first. The model is also consistent with the occasional occurrence of closely spaced pairs of bursts. Time-dependent, ideal-magnetohydrodynamic simulations confirm that the equatorial belt is not disrupted by Parker and interchange instabilities.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journa

    The soft and the hard pomerons in hadron elastic scattering at small t

    We consider simple-pole descriptions of soft elastic scattering for pp, pbar p, pi+ p, pi- p, K+ p and K- p. We work at t and s small enough for rescatterings to be neglected, and allow for the presence of a hard pomeron. After building and discussing an exhaustive dataset, we show that simple poles provide an excellent description of the data in the region - 0.5 GeV^2 < t < -0.1 GeV^2, 6 GeV<sqrt(s)< 63 GeV. We show that new form factors have to be used, and get information on the trajectories of the soft and hard pomerons.Comment: 27 pages, 9 figures, LaTeX. A few typos fixed, and references correcte

    ASCA X-ray source catalogue in the Galactic Center region

    The ASCA satellite made 107 pointing observations on a 5 x 5 deg^2 region around the center of our Milky Way Galaxy (the Galactic Center) from 1993 to 1999. In the X-ray images of the 0.7--3 keV or 3--10 keV bands, we found 52 point sources and a dozen diffuse sources. All the point sources are uniformly fitted with an absorbed power-law model. For selected bright sources, Sgr A*, AX J1745.6-2901, A 1742-294, SLX 1744-300, GRO J1744-28, SLX 1737-282, GRS 1734-292, AX J1749.2-2725, KS 1741-293, GRS 1741.9-2853, and an unusual flare source XTE J1739-302, we present further detailed spectral and timing analyses, and discuss their nature. The dozen extended X-ray sources comprise radio supernova remnants, giant molecular clouds, and some new discoveries. Most show emission lines from either highly ionized atoms or low-ionized irons. The X-ray spectra were fitted with either a thin thermal or power-law model.     Fractional dynamics of coupled oscillators with long-range interaction

    We consider one-dimensional chain of coupled linear and nonlinear oscillators with long-range power-wise interaction. The corresponding term in dynamical equations is proportional to 1/∣n−m∣α+11/|n-m|^{\alpha+1}. It is shown that the equation of motion in the infrared limit can be transformed into the medium equation with the Riesz fractional derivative of order α\alpha, when 0<α<20<\alpha<2. We consider few models of coupled oscillators and show how their synchronization can appear as a result of bifurcation, and how the corresponding solutions depend on α\alpha. The presence of fractional derivative leads also to the occurrence of localized structures. Particular solutions for fractional time-dependent complex Ginzburg-Landau (or nonlinear Schrodinger) equation are derived. These solutions are interpreted as synchronized states and localized structures of the oscillatory medium.Comment: 34 pages, 18 figure
